So you want to start crocheting? Perfect, you’ll love it! (Eventually.) Crocheting can be a bit intimidating, learning all the stitched, how to hold your yarn, what hooks you need, what yarn is best. I get it. I tried to get into crochet for months and just couldn’t get it right. Then one day, I did. Now I can’t stop.
In this post I’m going to show you in video format all the basics you need to get started crocheting like a pro in no time!
Basics of Crocheting
What you need
To crochet you really only need yarn and a crochet hook. The yarn you get (assuming it has the label on it) will tell you which size hook you need. I prefer a hook with a wooden handle, something a little larger to grip than just the metal stick. You can find these really easy at Hobby Lobby, that’s my shop of choice, or on Amazon if you type in “crochet hook with bamboo handle.
How to find a beginner friendly project
Start with YouTube and Pinterest. YouTube has everything and some really great tutorials. You can find some super cute projects and ideas on Pinterest and then either click the pin or type the idea in on YouTube to find something similar.
Here is a beginner friendly market tote bag that doesn’t take long at all and only has 2-3 types of stitches depending on how you want to do it!
Crochet Stitches
There are tons and tons of different crochet stitches. Even after mastering the craft, people still stumble upon more. That’s part of the fun, you can always try new patterns, stitches, and projects!
Below, you’ll find the most basic ones to start with so you’re ready to dive into any project you want.
Slip Knot
The slip knot is a common way to start a project. It’s the easiest and quickest way as well.
Crochet a chain
After you start your slip knot, you’ll likely start with a chain of some length. This will determine the size of your project.
Single Crochet Stitch
The single crochet stitch is about as basic as it gets. Lots of stitches build off of this stitch. Master this and the other ones get easier!
Double Crochet Stitch
The double crochet stitch is exactly what it sounds like, a double up of the single crochet stitch. This one can be handy for doing bigger projects faster since it’s a longer stitch.
Half Double Crochet
A half double crochet is a nice stitch for a thicker, fuller pattern. It’s a little bit bulkier and less “hole-y” than a double or triple stitch.
Tripe Crochet Stitch
Again, you guessed it. A tripe crochet stitch is building off a double crochet stitch. This guy is the longest and most “hole-y” of the stitches that are covered in this post. It can be handy for beg projects to get them done a little bit faster, but that means the project needs to be okay with some more gaps in there.
Slip Stitch
The slip stitch is a common way to close off a project. It gives it a nice finish without adding too much more bulk or size to your work.
